Description

I photographed the red kites, in this red kite canvas art, circling at a feeding station in mid Wales. It was a dramatic and inspiring event and the birds were impressive as they flew past and swooped in for food. I painted this to try to capture the awe of that moment and show the juxtaposition of the aesthetic beauty of the kites against the somewhat bloodthirsty source of the show.

More About this Red Kite Canvas Art

This striking red kite canvas art, featuring red kites in flight, serves as a dynamic embodiment of nature’s raw grace. Crafted with acrylic and enhanced with the precise definition of Inktense pencil, I bring you the essence of red kites in their natural habitat. The majestic birds are depicted with a sense of realism, their sharp features and rich plumage portrayed with attention to detail that conveys the power and dynamism of their flight.

The background contrasts the realism of the kites with a touch of whimsy, presenting an almost dreamlike tableau that marries the figurative with the abstract. Expressive brushstrokes give life to a landscape that is at once familiar and fantastical, where stylised trees and colourful foliage seem to echo the vibrancy and energy of the kites themselves.

This piece is not merely a visual encounter but a narrative one, too. It tells the story of life’s perpetual cycle, the awe-inspiring dance between predator and prey, and the balance of beauty and survival. The canvas becomes a window to that profound moment in mid Wales, where I stood witness to the dramatic ballet of the kites — powerful, elegant, and yet touched by the brutality of their existence.

For the discerning art buyer, this piece offers both an aesthetic feast and a contemplative journey. The piece distills the spectacle of nature into a form that resonates with the human experience, making it an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate works that bridge the real and the imagined, and that speak to both the eye and the spirit. Why Did I Make this Red Kite Canvas Art?

The Red Kite, recognized by its reddish-brown plumage and distinctive forked tail, has made a remarkable recovery in the UK over the past decades. Historically on the brink of extinction, with populations confined to remote parts of Wales, concerted conservation efforts have led to a resurgence. Today, Red Kites are commonly seen in central England and Wales, with thriving populations also reported in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland 1, 2.

These birds of prey favor open woodlands, pastures, and heathlands, but they can also be seen gliding over suburban areas along the M40 corridor, adapting impressively to semi-urban environments 3, 4. Their diet primarily consists of carrion and small mammals, reflecting their role as scavengers in the ecosystem 4.

Red kites appear in Welsh and English tales that underscore their majesty and beauty 5. Some examples of the symbolism associated with red kites are:

  • Heraldry and Family Crests. Red kites have appeared in British heraldry, where they symbolize keen vision and strength. The bird is often depicted in a striking pose, representing vigilance and readiness, which are prized attributes in heraldic traditions. These symbols are used in coats of arms and family crests to denote nobility, grace, and the ability to survey and oversee vast lands effectively.
  • Literature and Plays. The red kite is referenced in Shakespeare’s play “Coriolanus,” where it symbolizes the scavenger, cleaning up the streets of a not-so-glorious version of London. This depiction aligns with the historical view of red kites as both cleaners of waste and opportunistic feeders, reflecting on the dual nature of being seen as both helpful and a nuisance in urban settings.
  • Conservation and Cultural Heritage. In modern times, the red kite has become a symbol of successful wildlife conservation efforts in the UK. Once on the brink of extinction in England and Scotland, the red kite has made a remarkable comeback, thanks to conservation programs. This resurgence has transformed the bird into a symbol of environmental recovery and the power of dedicated conservation work. The kite’s revival is celebrated in various local festivals and educational programs, especially in areas like the Chilterns and parts of Wales, where their presence is particularly noteworthy.
