Description

Nettles in art are, at the least, unexpected but the fluorescent pinks oranges and blues of this painting suggested them to me. Nettles used to be eaten regularly as a spinache type green, and can be used as an anti-histamine. As a tea they are said to have cleansing properties and the Romans used to self flagellate with them to help them adapt to the cold damp climate of Britain. This exciting painting would add drama to any space. See more of my Wonderful Wildflowers.

Each brushstroke weaves a narrative of nature’s untamed elegance. The stinging nettle, often overlooked, takes centre stage here. Its vivid hues ranging from lush greens to fiery reds—come alive on the canvas. Why Feature Nettles in Art?

Find out about nettles in the U.K. here.

In the verdant tapestry of British folklore, the stinging nettle weaves its own intricate thread—a plant both feared and revered. Let us delve into its story, where ancient wisdom and ecological importance entwine.

These vibrant green sentinels signal the presence of fairy dwellings nearby. Their sting, like a prickly shield, wards against fairy mischief, black magic, and other sorceries. In the Elizabethan era, herbalists knew nettles well. They believed that Roman soldiers, centuries earlier, carried nettle seeds to the UK. These soldiers would lash themselves with nettle stems and leaves, invoking blood flow and warmth in the chilly British climate.

The stinging nettle, Urtica dioica, is Europe’s most common nettle. Its other names: burning weed, fire weed hint at its dual nature. Yes, it stings, but it also plays a vital role. During World War I, when cotton was scarce due to blockades, the German authorities turned to nettles. Gottfried Richter, a Viennese researcher, championed nettle fibres. Millions of marks were invested to plant this wonder plant along the Danube. Nettle-based yarns became a substitute for cotton, neutralising their stings during manufacture. Nettles thrive voraciously, demanding less pesticide and water than cotton. Their fibrous stems yield quality thread, echoing flax’s elegance. German fashion designer Gesine Jost even crafted tops, coats, and skirts from nettles, celebrating their resilience.

Nettles provide refuge for insects, including butterflies like the small tortoiseshell and peacock. Their leaves host aphids, sustaining ladybugs and lacewings. As dynamic accumulators, nettles draw nutrients from deep soil layers. When they decompose, they release these riches back into the earth, nourishing neighbouring plants. Nettle tea, rich in vitamins and minerals, invigorates our bodies. It aids in allergies, arthritis, and even hair health.

Let us honour its prickly grace and weave it into our narratives, both ancient and modern.
